Create a piece of web that really matters to your visitors

When I first decided to try out the web for profit, some of my friends said about their friend’s brother who’s doing really well online. All they did was putting together a site with useful website links and the adsense cash started to flow. Later I learned a lot more things about the web 2.0 and how websites make traffic and money. Now I know that putting some links to content won’t help you to build a big time website/ blog.

Create a website, where you produce the content

Some people also start a website with shared contents like YouTube videos. Why people would come to you if the video is available in YouTube? Instead of sharing, create your own content like videos, audio and text posts.

Give solutions, not links

I see a lot of website putting links to another website. A web surfer doesn’t like a link list but they like the solution. When asking a link from another site, the site would love to link to the original site instead of your link list. When people come to your site through the search, they would love to read it here without clicking to another page.

Solutions that worked!

Create website content about something that really worked for you. For an example, I wrote two different articles in my blog,

7 Ways how to get more comments on your blog post
I tripled my comments count and how you can do it too?

Both of the articles are almost same but one article is about tips and the other one is about real & proven results. People love to read that really worked and want to see the results.

A blend of contents

A website isn’t perfect and it won’t be. A mix of shared content, links to useful articles and the majority of your own content can help you build an attractive website. What do you think?

Setting up successful out posts to brand your blog

Blogging is not about think, write and publish -it’s all about the marketing strategy. Have you ever imagined why lots of other new blogs are getting higher traffic volumes than you do? Why new sites are getting better page ranks and why such a low quality articles are getting bookmarked? The reason is they did other things instead of writing articles. On this article I’m going to write about blog out posts and how to successfully use them for your site.

Blog, out posts are just like outlets of shops and different companies. The main goal is not about the sales everytime, it’s about getting noticed. Have you thought that before why celebrities appear on TV shows? Why business people appear on conferences? or why companies open an outlet on business expos? The reason for them is to show up their selves in front of people. This is why we need to put our blog’s brand in different places of the internet. Let see couple of examples,

1. BlogCatalog

As a blogger you must have a BlogCatalog account. This is the ideal place to meet bloggers, a community dedicated to bloggers. Submit your blog and get listed. Their search engine won’t send you much traffic, but new bloggers will find your blog from BC. You can also join the discussion, make friends and can create a group about your brand.

Now you can create two things for your blog in facebook, a page or a group. Setting a group is easy and invite your FB friends to make it crowdy. 5. Social profiles

You must use other social bookmarking sites like StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious and many more. Don’t forget to add your blog link and write a short bio about it. These will work as your other out posts.

6. Article directories

Write some articles on article directories such as Ezine Articles and Add your blog link on those articles. There are other popular services like Squidoo and Hubpages where you can put your brand. The best way to use these two sites as your out post is to create a self made wiki about your blog.

7. Guest posts

Guest posts can be used as an out post too. Look around your blog niche and connect with your fellow authors. Write some interesting articles for them and this will give you a chance to appear infront of a new audience.

Using landing pages

You might want to keep the visitors coming from your out posts. The best way to send them to a customized page is to use a landing page. Read this article: Lets create an effecting landing page to welcome new visitors!

10 Things you need to get started in Freelancing online

I’m a freelance web designer and I do web designing for companies and individuals. At start (on June 2009) I started off doing it from odesk and it’s a great platform for freelancers like us to get started and find work. Now days I get offers directly through email and my new clients are being referred by my older clients. I still receive emails, messages and question asking how do I get started in freelancing? So here’s an article which will help you prepare yourself to get started on freelancing online.

1 Have a good schedule

It’s up to you whenever you want to do the work, but you have to come up with a regular time and schedule; such as you will work from Monday to Friday, that’s cool or you can also choose to work only in Saturday and Sundays. At the same time you have to come up with working hours too. Your clients who will provide the work, they have to understand about your working hours so they can be able to find you in that time.

2 Have your tools ready!

Working online requires a computer and internet connection. Make sure you have a good computer, compatible enough to handle your work load. If you are doing data entry/ virtual assistant jobs, then having a minimal PC is okay but if you are doing web/ graphics design or photo editing, then you have to buy and expensive one. You have to need 24 hours or internet access or at-least when your working hours are.

3 Softwares for your job

Depending on your work, choose the most appropriate softwares you need. You only need a word processor when you are dealing with writing. As a web designer I use plenty of applications such as photo editor, web design software, flash application and many more online. You have to make sure you have access, plus knowledge over what application you are using and it’s a popular one.

4 Find a good outsourcing marketplace

As a beginner, nobody knows about your skills and what you can do so it’s best to get associated with one of the marketplaces you like. I highly recommend odesk, and it has given me a carrier. There are plenty more out there like Guru, RentACoder, ScriptLance, Elance etc but make sure you focus on one marketplace than having your face on all of them. I had success in odesk just because I was into it until I got my first job and never lost hope.

5 Build an online portfolio

Nothing works best than having an online portfolio; take a look at my portfolio here: now the idea came to me when most of my clients wanted to see my portfolio. I have portfolio in odesk but the problem is nothing is organized properly. So when I created a portfolio here at my blog, I started to get more clients over time. Even great, I had this portfolio rank well in google for “Thesis Theme Design” and having a google page rank of 3. People started to find my portfolio through google. You should create your own portfolio by building a website/ blog.. trust me, it will pay off!

6 Socialize yourself

Don’t just sit there and spend all the time working on projects. Use facebook to expand your network. The more contacts you have, then more the chances you will get for future projects. I’m using facebook from 2007 and that time I connected with few different people online including Courtney Engle. We are great friends and always chat about things here and there. Last year she hired me to help in her social media business and that’s a great example of getting work from social media. Till now I’m connected with her and more work is about to come from her side. As the same way you can use linkedin, twitter and other social media networks.

7 Have most ways to connect with you

You need to have the most ways to get connected such as email, yahoo messenger, google talk, msn, irc, icq etc. Skype is the most popular among buyers around the world and it helps you to make free pc to pc calls. The more options you provide, the more chances you have to get a job.

8 Start a blog

There’s no such social media better than blogging. The number one benefit to blogging is, it’s super SEO friendy. Write your experiences, how you achieved different things and how you solved a problem. People will start to read your blog and soon they will convert into buyers. Start blogging.

9 Learn new skills and stay updated

Internet changes everyday and so does the job market. Don’t just stay there with you basic word processing knowledge. Learn new things and apply them. The more you learn, the more you are valuable as a provider. Stay updated with latest trends and technology.

10 Be detail oriented and professional

What ever you do, try to see it as the buyer -if you were the one taking this, would you like this finished product? Be detail oriented and perfectionist. It will take more time to complete but is worth the time. One of my client Mark Wright helped me to learn this valuable lesson. One of my other client said: “People who provide much more detail, get paid more.”

Bonus! Be helpful and give something they didn’t expected

Even if you have completed the assignment, your buyer may still need some last minute tweaks. Be helpful to provide the service free of charge. And try to solve their problem. Don’t act like that you have a hurry and need to end the assignment, ask them if there’s anything more you can help them out with. In this way, you will have a good reputation and it will help you get more work in the long term.

Have your say

  • Are you working as a freelancer?
  • How do you handle your clients?
  • Do you have anything more to add here?

Should I show my feedburner feed counter or not?

One of the coolest feature of feedburner is the feedburner feed counter chicklet. You have seen it on lots of blogs and wondered how they got 1000, 5000 or even 10,000 RSS readers? It looks impressive and you want to show up your own counter too, but is it the right time to put it up on your site?

Should I show my feedburner feed counter or not? blogkori

When I first started my blog and setup my feedburner account, I showed my RSS counter widget. The number was 02. The next day it was 5 and then again it was 3. Then one of my friends said to remove it, because a low number sends away new readers.

For an example, if you visit a blog for the first time and see 10 people are reading this blog, then you won’t be interested in that blog. The blog must have other valuable aspect before you can subscribe to that blog. The reality is, people love to follow a crowd. They want to be among with the large audience. As a beginner, you must wait until the counter reaches 50 or even more.

A couple of hundreds isn’t enough every time!

100-200 RSS readers won’t be enough to attract all new visitors. Some people read big blogs with 10,000+ readers. So its better not to show your RSS feed counter until it reaches 1000.

Hide and let them imagine!

If you write great quality articles, your readers will think you have a nice reader’s base. Hide your RSS reader and let them wonder, how many people are reading the blog.

A big RSS readership is a great social proof

Having a big RSS number makes new visitors stick to your blog and come back. This is one of the great things to attract direct advertisers.

One last thing for RSS readers

It’s bad to only support a blog with a big RSS number. There are lots of small blogs with outstanding content. You should subscribe by the quality of the articles and not because of the high number!
