If you’re writing, then you don’t need a faster CPU speed but if you’re dealing with graphics and videos, then you will need the fastest performance from your computer. Plus you have to ensure that all of your computer data are secure. I didn’t use any Antivirus Software since I first bought my 2nd PC (since 2001) and this is why I had to pay a lot over those years.
I had to re-format and install windows every week and that means you have to start collecting those work again and again. Basically I cant agree with the fact that any anti-virus program wont slow your PC down! Well it is bound to and quite natural! For paid AV I trust only Kaspersky! The best in this market, Costs only 500 Rs in India!! For free I prefer Avast (Currently using that on my Windows 7 :D ) All these anti-virus and virus seems nothing when you start learning programming ;)

Ya, it sure eats a little memory from the system, but the one I use (SpywareDoctor) Doesn’t takes much RAM running it. Which one you use for pc security?
I use spyware blaster! It actually stops the load of any spyware before installation! Also I use just Avast anti-virus (free edition) on my Windows 7 platform! On Vista I use Kaspersky! And I think FF 3.5 is pretty secure on handling the malicious sites!
But one thing is that Winodws is not at all secure like Linux. I have used Ubuntu, Kbuntu and those are the best! :)

I think no matter how hard you try, they come and infect your pc. I recommend a software which runs smoothly and takes less time to upgrade. Like spyware doctor, takes low ram when scanning and the update time is fast.
I tried kaspersky and it comes with false positives in my pc. And avast(free) don’t have a real time protection. ~but that’s only for my PC and my own experience, I’m not telling these are bad.
I completely agree with above post, all the bloggers should have their PC fully virus free. because a system with full of virus can slow the performance of whole system..
It’s true, I spent years with virus in my PC and had slow pc + internet performance. Now I’m happy with my security soft and don’t care if it makes my pc slow.

True! In today’s spammers’ paradise, we must protect our computers with an effective anti-virus. But, my laptop [not mine, really] is a Pentium III processor and also runs a server. So, it’s already a bit slower than default. When the anti-virus program is turned on, it feels like I’m using windows 1900!
However, AVG/Antivir is another great free anti-virus software. I think it’s a bit better than Avast.

I use free (home edition) version of Avast. It’s quite good and fast but last week it stopped to work and I lost internet connection, got some really weird virus so had to reinstall windows for new… I was thinking on looking for new antivirus but then after I read lots of feedbacks about those programs I dedicated to stay with Avast anyway ;)

That’s so sad.. anyways, you have to keep your pc virus free and run updates + scans.
I use free AVG it does a decent job. I also use Spybot Search & Destroy to deal with any spyware/adware. These days it is crucial to protect your pc against all these threats. Even though anti-virus software may slow your pc down a bit, it is nothing compared to what a virus will do.
That must’ve been a real hassle back when you were reinstalling windows once a week. It’s been a while since I’ve had computer problems that severe, but over the years I’ve grown to hate the whole process of restoring windows.
Now I do feel a lot annoyed when I had to re-install the windows every week. I couldn’t store any files and had lost so much data. Installing those apps again and again is a real pain.
I don’t like Spybot search and destroy because the process is slow and the service is not convincing enough. But still it’s free and a better cleaner.
